Red sunset

This was one of the more unique sunsets I’ve noticed in a while. At first it looked like it would be a very boring sunset. There was a lot of cloud cover and I didn’t think much would get through. Then I began seeing that nice soft reddish soft glow and a few minutes later there were the ripples you see here.

Which one is not there?

The above is from a portrait I made for a client. The client is missing a tooth and asked me to see what I could do about filling that gap so it would not show in the photograph.

I specialize in portraits not dentures but he was insistent and I always do my best to please the customer so I gave it a shot.

One of the teeth in that picture is my digital creation not Mother Nature’s. Can you guess which one? Where does the black hole belong in that smile?

Jordan – another example of natural lighting

Goes without saying photography is all about the light. I am very happy with the way the light worked for this photograph of Jordan.

Its very subtle but there is feeling to the light – the light is warm, colorful, and soft.

Two tips for composing your crops in Lightroom 3

This isn’t so much a tip for cropping in Lightroom 3, that is pretty cut and dried. This is about getting the composition right.

1. I like to look at the preview in the navigator section in the upper left part of the Lightroom 3 window. Maybe its the smaller size, maybe its the way it updates quickly as you adjust and test – something about it make it much easier for me to get the balance and composition the way I want it.

2. Turn out the lights. Hit your L button once to dim, again to turn everything off except your crop. Your image will be surrounded by black. Hit L a third time and everything is back to normal.

My preference is the first one – it requires no extra button pushing. It sort of dovetails with another tip I learned – that is to intentionally not focus on what you are looking at while you compose so it will be blurry. The mind gets lost in the details and lines and doesn’t pay attention to what it is supposed to be weighing or balancing. My theory is the smaller image accomplishes the same end.

Natural Light on Victoria

This is one of those pictures that keeps me happy for going to the effort to use natural light. Its easy to wind up with problems when all you have is natural outdoor lighting (and reflectors and diffusers) but when it works, it works.

This was a great shoot overall. Victoria is the name of the model and she was delightful to work with.

This is one of those shots taken between the “real shots.” There’s a loud low-flying helicopter passing directly above us.

New prices on all portrait prints and more products

I noticed my pricing structure was inflating the prices on the smaller sized prints. It had to do with a formula and… anyway, to make a long story short, I fixed the problem and prices on prints are excellent, especially considering the quality of prints you’ll receive.

Some examples:

A regular 4×6 print was $1.15 – now it is only $0.38.

An 8×10 print was $5.95 – now they are $3.38.

I want to stress that this price change isn’t part of some marketing gimmick where I was seeing if I could take people to the cleaners – no, it was much more embarrassing than that, it was simply a ham-fisted mistake I made setting up my web site.

I also added more products – stuff like calendars, stamps, magazine covers, trading cards, and some really nice standouts, canvas wraps, and Fotoflots.

Make sure you click on “View all products” under the featured products that appear on each page of photos.

Waikiki Natatorium

I took these shots of the Waikiki Natatorium War Memorial near Kapiolani Park. I love this era of architecture. The “living memorial” was built to honor the 101 soldiers from Hawaii who died serving in WWI as well as the 100 others from the Territory who made it back home after the Great War. It is basically an outdoor swimming pool – a saltwater swimming pool. You can view the photos of the Natatorium by visiting the gallery.

Woke up very early this morning to catch sunrise at Kailua Beach Park. Early on the colors weren’t very exciting so I began wondering around the park taking random shots of other things like the canoes parked at the boat house.
